Edging

Approaching & withholding

Edging overview

Edging builds longer, more intense orgasms for 65.5% of women.

Edging is approaching the promised land, getting close to your destination, and then extending your trip! Repeatedly nearing orgasm—but preventing it before it happens.

Three Edging Techniques

Variation 1: Pausing, Going to zero and Rebuilding

35% of women who love edging use pause edging

With the pausing method, you completely stop all touch just before orgasm. When the feeling of impending orgasm is completely gone, you start over again from the beginning. This approach can take the longest but women who swear by it say that it leads to the most intense pleasure.

The break can be anywhere from a minute to a few hours, depending on what works best for you. When you start again, begin with initial warm-up, build-up and approach before stopping at the last moment again.

Stimulation

Move through all of the stages from warm-up motions, through buildup and approach, all the way up to the point just before orgasm.

Complete Stop. Cool Down

Hands off without any stimulation at all. Allow enough time so the buildup completely subsides. Nipple stimulation, caressing and kissing are great here, but hands off downstairs.

Variation 2: Distracting the orgasm away

36% of women who love edging use distraction edging

With the distraction method, you create sudden or intense sensations away from the clit just before climax. This shifts your focus away from the clit and prevents the orgasm. Some women describe the incoming (no pun intended) orgasm like a sneeze that’s building up; and, just as getting startled can prevent a sneeze, it’s the same principle here—the distracting sensations away from the clit prevent the orgasm.

Stimulation Motions

The touches that build pleasure and move you closer to climax. Repeat them until the orgasm is near, but not so close that you’re past the point of no return and the climax can’t be stopped. (Although, let’s be honest, there are worse problems to have, right?)

Distraction Motions

Touches that surprise and distract to prevent the orgasm from happening. These tend to be sudden, inconsistent bursts of sensation far away from the clit, like squeezing or tapping. Once the feeling of building climax eases, you can start rebuilding again with the stimulation motions.

Variation 3: Continuous Edging

48% of women who love edging use continuous edging

With continuous edging, you walk right up to the orgasm and then, just before it happens, shift to touches away from the clit that are still pleasurable, but aren’t focused enough to actually bring orgasm. After the approaching orgasm fades away, you return to stimulating the clit, or whatever brings you to orgasm.

Continuous edging is much more fluid than the other variations. That’s one reason that it’s preferred by so many women because there can be several smaller and less obvious approaches and withholdings. But there’s no right or wrong way—find the one that works best for you.

Stimulation Motions

The touches that build pleasure and bring on climax, repeated until the orgasm is near. You want to build close to climax, but not so close that the climax has already begun and can’t be stopped. (Again, there are worse problems in the world. Travelled too far? Chalk it up to experience and make the trip again soon.)

Tangent Motions

As orgasm gets close, move touches away from the clit to let the buildup fade away. Then, restart the stimulation motions once the feeling of approaching orgasm subsides.

Bringing it to the Bedroom

Good to know

  • Lighter is better. 70% of women who like edging say it helps to reduce the pressure when climax is near.
  • If you come easily/quickly, try the pause or distraction variations.
  • If you tend to lose orgasms completely, try the continuous variation.

Most common challenges

  • Passing the point of no return. If you get too close, there’s no stopping it. Try edging earlier.
  • Giving in. Edging can be difficult because it’s so tempting to push into the orgasm when it’s near. Patience is hard; you’re not alone!
  • If you can’t rebuild to orgasm, know that edging isn’t for everyone. Some women just find it frustrating. Now you know it’s not for you. On to the next technique!
